In many of the recipes on Pisco Trail, I talk about the influence of Inca, Spanish, African, Chinese, and Japanese cultures. But did you know that today in Lima it’s not uncommon to meet a local Peruvian with an Italian or German last name? Why? Because they are also part of Peru’s immigrant history.
For example, the D’Onofrio and Motta families from Italy opened bakeries in Peru that would produce one of Peru’s most cherished traditions — the Panettone for Christmas. The German mathematician Maria Reiche, also known as the Lady of the Lines, studied the famous Nazka Lines for over 40 years, and her work helped declare the lines a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
To honor these immigrants, start with Pisco, then combine a spirit from Germany, a spirit from Italy, and tie it all together with citrus. Presenting a Beautiful Flower from the desert in the Ica Valley of Peru, the Pisco Bella Fiore.
